Old Anglo-American laboratory in Stevenson Street vandalised

The old Anglo-American laboratory has been vandalised and all the essentials stolen.

A structure has been vandalised and left an empty shell.

The old Anglo-American Laboratory in Stevenson Street has been standing empty for a while now and people are helping themselves to steel, corrugated tiles and whatever they can take.

The copper cables have been stripped and only the covers remain.

According to Mr Johan de Beer, the place was given to the local municipality, “but they did not take care of it”.

The building is being guarded presently by security guards at the site.

One of the security guards said they have it tough as people are coming to vandalise and steal, especially the drug users, “who are very arrogant,” according to one of the guards. “One night we found them on the roof stealing the corrugated tiles and when ordered to come down, they refused. We spent more than 30 minutes trying to persuade them to come down; we had to fire warning shots. Some people come during the day and some at night. They ‘work’ shifts like us, but they are a real problem,” said the guard.

While visiting the building, some of the people were sitting near the stolen gate waiting for a chance to get in.

The roof has also been stolen in some of the rooms of the old Anglo-American laboratory.

Most of the important essentials inside the building have been stolen. In one part of the building, copper cables were stripped and what was left was the covers.

From the entrance of the gate, windows, doors, corrugated tiles, parts of a generator, tiling and anything useful has been stolen to be sold.

What was the worker’s change rooms, now remains an empty shell and is left open.

A tap was found leaking 24 hours because the pipes have been stolen as well. One of the people was found sleeping in one of the garages.

Mr Lebo Mofokeng, the municipal communication manager promised that he will give feedback after investigating the matter; he has not done so at the time of going to print.
