Police arrest seven after violent protests in Klarinet

Captain Eddie said investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected.

Witbank Police apprehended seven suspects in connection with public violence and damage to infrastructure.

 

The suspects appeared before the Witbank Magistrates Court on Monday, May 15.

 

On Thursday, May 11 at around 01:30 police members attended a strike in Extension 7, Klarinet.

 

At around 06:30 the protest action was still ongoing on the Verena Road where police tried to diffuse the situation.

 

It is alleged the community started throwing stones at police members.

 

According to reports whilst police members went to reload rubber bullets, it is alleged the community burnt down a truck that was stationed next to a mine in Klarinet.

 

Male and female suspects arrested were between the ages of 19 and 31 years.

 

Captain Eddie Hall confirmed that the arrest comes after the suspects were involved in public violence the past week in Klarinet, “Investigations are ongoing and more arrests are expected,” Hall confirmed.
