Thirteen-year-old boy and two others killed during service delivery protest

The deputy head boy of Robert Carruthers Primary School is one of three people who were killed as a result of the service delivery protest.

A 13-year-old boy is among three people who died during the four-day protest action on the N4.

Demonstrators took to the streets to vent their wrath, blocking critical routes and torching tires.

Police were sent in to disperse the crowd, but tensions quickly increased, ending in violent fighting.

On Wednesday, May 10, Philasande Yende, the deputy head boy of Robert Carruthers Primary School, was allegedly caught in the crossfire between demonstrators and police.

During this confrontation, a stray bullet seemingly hit the youngster.

He was subsequently taken to the nearest hospital, where he died from his injuries.

A soccer player from the School of Excellence was also killed during the protest and a motorist travelling on the N4 allegedly made a U-turn to avoid the protesters when the vehicle collided with a burning truck.

The circumstances of both these incidents are yet to be confirmed.

Several people were also injured since the beginning of the protest.

The Yende family have voiced their tremendous grief over the horrific occurrence, demanding justice and accountability for those responsible.
