Councillor Maureen is going to nap in one of the many potholes on Duvenhage Street

It takes drastic measures to get the council to notice problems in eMalahleni.

There is most probably not a street in the city that does not have a pothole.

A gaping pothole in Duvenhage Street in Die Heuwel has residents boiling over with frustration because their complaints about the pothole and his little cohorts are falling on deaf ears.

The ward councillor for the area, Clr Maureen Scheepers has decided to take measures to escalate the repairs in a few streets in the area that has not been attended to.

The streets are Bridgeman Crescent, Duvenhage-, Mulberry- and Cycad Streets.

Scheepers announced on Monday, April 24 that she has launched an online petition for the repair of these streets, but not only will she be submitting this online petition to the department, but has committed to hosting a 12-hour on-site petition drive in Duvenhage Street where one of the largest potholes is situated on Saturday, May 20.

“I will spend 12 hours in the street next to the biggest potholes of these listed streets. I will remain in the street from 12:00 to 00:00 with my teddy bear companion until the pothole is noticed,” said a determined Scheepers.

“I have been reporting these streets for repairs since November 2021 and I feel that extreme measures have to be taken for the extreme need of the residents of Die Heuwel. These roads are not only not drivable anymore, but extremely dangerous,” said Scheepers.

The online petition officially opened on April 24 and closes on May 21.

Scheepers said she will submit the petition documents to all the relevant departments on May 22.
