Hijackers target late-night drivers in eMalahleni

The start of the new month was marked by the theft of a Kia Rio on OR Tambo Road.

Drivers are no longer safe on the streets of eMalahleni during the night.

It appears that individuals are most likely to be hijacked in the city in the late hours, given the two most recent hijackings that took place after 22:00.

On Friday, March 31 at around 23:00, a man was believed to have been abducted from his car by a lone armed suspect.

The complainant was driving his bakkie down Jellicoe Street when a grey Toyota Corolla blocked his path and a suspect emerged brandishing a gun at him. He attempted to reverse but was unsuccessful, so he turned off the engine.

After he opened the door, the suspect entered and took the keys out of the ignition before dragging him out of the vehicle, stealing his cellphone, and driving off in the vehicle.

The start of the new month was then marked by the theft of a Kia Rio on OR Tambo Road by four suspects.

On Saturday, April 1 the complainant was waiting at a traffic light around 23:00 when four suspects approached him, brandished a gun, and forced him into the car’s trunk before driving to Klarinet, where they abandoned him and left with the car.

Witbank Police spokesperson, Sergeant David Ratau, encourages motorists to be alert at all times while driving.

“Leave a gap when you are driving, following a distance, be observant of other cars, try to escape if you are able and if the cars around you look suspicious, make your getaway and drive to a safe place,” said Ratau.
