Raising awareness can be a fun walk

Sanca is a non-government organization that aims to prevent and treat alcohol and drug dependence. It recently conducted a fun-walk on Human Rights Day to raise awareness.

The Emalahleni South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Sanca) conducted a fun-walk on substance abuse and human rights of recovering addicts recently.

The event was held on Human Rights Day, March 21, in collaboration with Pastor Ray Mabena from Umlilo Wevangeli Church.

The walk commenced at the Poly Clinic to the Ackerville Stadium from 06:30 to 11:00 with a dress code of white T-shirts and jeans or gym wear with takkies.

The ‘walkers’ are ready to raise awareness on their way to Ackerville Stadium.

Sanca explained that the rationale behind the walk is to raise awareness that recovering addicts have rights that are not to be violated besides the stigma they face.

“They should have equal access to health care services, including health care and protection. In addition, to fight the scourge of substance abuse, we must come together as a community with stakeholders and service users,” said one of the organisers.

Sanca is a non-government organisation established in 1956.

Its major objectives are the prevention and treatment of alcohol and drug dependence.

These objectives are achieved by providing highly effective primary and secondary prevention services and comprehensive treatment programmes for chemically dependent people and their families.
