Dirty environment turned into a beautiful park in Ackerville

The current project of adopting a spot in the ward is to build a township theme park and a garden plaza.

What started as a concern for some people living in Ackerville about their environment ended up being a beautiful park.

Residents of Ward 13 in Ackerville started the park project in December last year, cleaning the area as they were concerned about the garbage.

The aim was to clean and create job opportunities in the process.

That resulted in Sun Cooper Park.

What used to be a dirty area has been turned into a beautiful green park in Ward 13 in Ackerville.

“We are a non-profit company that works to improve the lives of people living in underserved communities. We have been working with the community since December on a cleaning campaign called ‘Siyazenzela’, meaning we do it ourselves as the community of Ward 13. Our current project of adopting a spot in the ward is to build a township theme park and a garden plaza; including a Putt-Putt golf course, restaurant, shopping area, salon and barber shop, internet cafe, children playground, agriculture area and events and entertainment centre,” said Langelihle Maziya.

Maziya added to say that they want to revive the environment in the area while the long-term plan is to create something out of the park.

They also intend to tap into the local economy in the park by having an entertainment area, museum park and other money-making businesses.

He explained that they started by digging a big hole and putting all the garbage in the hole while they were cleaning the environment.

Now they have a clean park and they have planted trees and grass and secured the park with painted tyres.

Work in progress as some areas of Ward 13 still need some cleaning.

They will need five to six million Rands to achieve their dreams.

The group is also fundraising as the people working at the park are volunteering.

The volunteers are both young and elderly people in the ward working in the park.

They started with a small portion, but now they have covered a large part of the area.

They would like to thank the office of the executive mayor for the support they have received. The administration is done by the executive mayor’s office.
