Illegal mining activities at Leeuwpoort lands both father and son in hot water with the police

It is believed that the police told the father that they cannot arrest him as it would be illegal to do so, and he left saying he will get his son but never returned.

A father and son were arrested earlier this month after allegedly defeating the course of justice and engaging in illegal mining activity, respectively.

It is believed that during an operation by the police to investigate illegal mining at Leeuwpoort in September 2022, a truck driver ran away when he saw the police and left the engine of the truck running.

After a while, a man allegedly arrived and introduced himself as the driver’s father.

According to the police, he refused to call his son back when requested to by the police, saying he was the owner of the truck, and that they should arrest him instead.

It is believed that the police told him they cannot arrest him as it would be illegal to do so, and he left saying he will get his son, but never returned.

The next day, the police allegedly met with the father at court, who still maintained that he should be arrested and refused to disclose his son’s whereabouts.

The truck is believed to have been booked in at the police station as it was not in a roadworthy condition.

Justice, however, came knocking on the police station’s doors on February 8 when the father and son allegedly visited the station requesting the return of their truck.

The father was then arrested for defeating the course of justice and his son for illegal mining.
