Good Samaritan ‘lights up’ Ward 33

“People have been robbed and stabbed during the night because of the lack of light. To be clear, I’m not doing it for fame,” Xolani said.

Ward 33 is as electrifying as ever with a resident who took up the ladder to brighten Extension 8 for all residents when he, together with Democratic Alliance Ward 33 Councillor Kim Faduk, took to the streets to fix street lights.

Faduk explained that Mr Xolani Mdaga, an eager resident from Ward 33, approached her to assist the community with lights permanently off in Extension 8.

“I spoke to the Council’s Electrical department and arranged that Xolani collects light bulbs for the street lamps. So grateful to work with eager residents who want to make Ward 33 a better and brighter ward,” Kim said.

Xolani is a resident of Eugene Marais Street in Extension 8.

He said he started the initiative to make his community a safe place, where residents can feel free to go out at night.

Xolani explained that he contacted his councillor for assistance; she made it possible and made the necessary arrangements.

He thanked Kim for her effort, consideration and kindness in listening to people.

He said the community also assists the initiative by being on the lookout for damage, theft or vandalisation of the street lights, bulbs and cables.

“People have been robbed and stabbed during the night because of the lack of light. To be clear, I’m not doing it for fame,” Xolani said.

Xolani’s eagerness does not stop in Extension 8, as he is willing to assist other extensions in the ward too.

“It’s not about me or Ms Kim, but the community, people’s lives and feeling safe in their community. Change can occur if we all work together as a community,” he said.

Ward 33 is a ward filled with residents famous for taking action and who will not hesitate to step in and ‘lighten’ up their community.
