Search for Henk postponed until tomorrow

The strong currents made the search very difficult.

The search for the man who drowned yesterday was suspended.

Rescue teams spend the day on the Olifants River searching for

Henk Heyns who drowned on December 27 while fishing.

He was fishing a short distance away from his home nestled on the banks of the Olifants River at Kromdraai.

The Olifants River is in full flood.

The National Sea Rescue Institute fine-combed the river, a helicopter search was conducted and members of SAPS, the neighbourhood watch, and members of the public searched along the embankment.

The river is in full flood this morning.

Witbank Dam Flood Management send out a warning yesterday after the dam reached 98.4%.

They warned residents at Presidentsrus that the low-water bridge will be flooded.

At 08:25 this morning the decision was taken to open a fourth sluice gate as the dam level rose overnight.

By this afternoon the Witbank Dam level was at 97.8% and four sluice gates opened at 600mm each.

“Please pray for the Heyns family as they wait for news. We will continue our search early tomorrow morning,” said Mr Tommie Potgieter, who is part of the search team.
