‘Comply with traffic rules’ asks MEC

Over 14 000 summonses were issued to motorists for various offences.

Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe, has once more urged motorists who will be travelling during this Festive Season to use the road cautiously.

The MEC has been briefed that so far law enforcement officers have stopped and checked over 72 000 vehicles in various operations which include block patrols, and speed- and weighbridge operations.

About 22 000 of the stopped vehicles went through various weighbridges across the province.

Over 14 000 summonses were issued to motorists for various offences ranging from reckless driving, and faulty vehicle mechanisms to other moving traffic violations.

Officers impounded over 400 vehicles. Twelve motorists were also arrested so far for drinking and driving.

“We encourage our law enforcers to continue working hard to reign in on errant driver behaviour and bring to book those who are not obeying the rules,” said Shongwe

Locally five people travelling from Musina to Mozambique were involved in a fatal vehicle accident on the N4 on Tuesday, December 20.

A burst tyre is believed to have been the cause of the accident.

The driver lost control and the bakkie rolled several times before landing on its side near Louise Street, adjacent to the N4.

One person died on the scene and three others were rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

Another accident was reported on Saturday, December 17 where two motor vehicles collided on Verena road. One fatality was reported.

The MEC also appealed to those who will be taking to the road to comply with the rules.
