Woman allegedly raped near Hertzog Street in CBD

Gender-Based Violence against Women and Children continues to thrive in eMalahleni.

Although the campaign of the International 16 Days of Activism against Women and Children was publicly commemorated in eMalahleni and surrounding areas through various awareness campaigns; sadly the reality is that it still happens.

On Saturday, December 10, a woman was brutally raped near Hertzog Street in the Central Business District (CBD) whilst walking alone at around 19:30.

The victim was said to be walking when a man appeared from the bushes, and threatened her to not make a sound.

It was further alleged that the suspect forcefully grabbed the victim’s cellphone before raping her.

Witbank SAPS against any form of crime against women and children. Witbank Police Captain Eddie Hall encouraged Emalahleni community members to play their part by:

1) Reject and report abusers- Act and don’t look away!

2) Do not protect abusers, report them!

3) Do not engage in abusive activities and become an abuser- Stop abuse.

4) Challenge and denounce cultural practices that perpetuate gender inequalities.

5) Be sensitive and supportive to GBV victims – share helpful information and support causes near you.

6) Seek personal help to change harmful behaviors such as alcohol and substance abuse.

7) Teach children values of gender equality.

8) Protect children from exposure to violence and harmful content on internet and social media, including pornography, sexual solicitation.
