Phola protesters not happy with local mine’s employment strategy

Phola residents want Sereti Mine to change its employment initiative.

Protestors at Phola portrayed their anger over employment issues at a local mine through violent protests.

On Thursday, November 10 Phola residents, particularly Ward 30, gathered at the R545 Ogies/Balmoral road and went on a protest against the new mine under Seriti protesting for employment.

According to police, they blocked the road with burning tyres, stones, and various objects.

“They threw stones at passing vehicles while on the other hand stopping other vehicles and demanding money from the motorists to allow them to pass,” said Sergeant Thabang Petros Ntuli, Phola SAPS spokesperson.

He said consequently, more violence ascended and the protesters started burning vehicles.

In the process, two trucks and one bakkie were set alight and used to block the road.

The protestors met with the mine’s community liaison officer and indicated they want the mine to employ 80% of their ward.

The mine on the other hand wants to employ workers from all three wards equally.

The local police with help from KwaMhlanga Public Order Policing joined hands and managed to calm the situation.

A case docket for public violence has been opened.

No one has been arrested so far, pending investigation.

Ms Linda Khuluse, communication officer from Sereti confirmed the incident.

The mining company did not want to add any comments.
