Witbank Rugby Club had a ‘ball’ at its year-end function

The year-end function took place on October 29, and all in attendance shared in laughter, support and deep pride for the team and those who received awards.

Witbank Rugby Club management team: Addie de Wit (vice president), Rudo Marx (club manager), Frik Visage (chairman), Zelda Freitag (treasurer), Chanelle van den Heever (finances) and Gerhard van den Heever (club president).

Witbank Rugby Club hosted its end-of-year function this past weekend, and members, players and loved ones ‘scrummed’ together for a successful Saturday evening.

The function took place at the Portuguese Hall on October 29.

The eventful evening kicked off at 17:00, and the club expressed gratitude to its sponsors and delivered a heartwarming speech about its passion for playing rugby.

The results were as follows:

‘Bar Vlieg’ of the year: Derick Haasbroek.
‘Bollie Makers’ of the year: Waldo Nelson and Frik Visagie.
‘Trip Switch’ of the year: Jack Manaso.
‘Bus is Vol’ of the year: Lefa Leshaba.
Personality of the year: Lefa Leshaba and Derick Haasbroek.
Best Junior Advancement of the year: Junior Mngomezulu.
Best Senior Advancement of the year: Dawie Lange.
Most Loyal Players of the year: Joe Fourie and MC Botes.
Most Versatile Player of the year: Stefan Nel.
2nd Team Player of the year: Mikhail von Willing.
Forward Player of the year: MC Botes.
Backline Player of the year: Junior Mngomezulu.
7’s Player of the year: Tshepo Matimba.
Try Scorer of the year: Lefa Leshaba.

Prestige Awards for playing for the club for five years: Stefan Nel, Ntabi Makgakga, Victo Ntshangase, Ruan van der Colff, Jack Manase, Michael Chabant and Derick Haasbroek.
Prestige awards for playing for the club for 10 years: MC Botes, Christo Nelson, Pieter Clarence and Winsin Theron.
Club Player of the year: Joe Fourie.
Player of the decade: Waldo Nelson.

The club also handed over jerseys for the 1st team and a blazer for the player of the decade: Waldo Nelson.

After the awards ceremony, the attendees dished a hearty meal and shared in laughter, support and happiness for the successful year.

As in any good game of rugby, there comes a time to blow the whistle for half-time. In the same way, the end of the year comes around, and it’s time for the players to take off their rugby shoes to kick back and relax before the next exciting year of action.
