KwaGuqa New Extension electricity outage

Residents of the New Extension in KwaGuqa are advised to plan in preparation for power outages.

The electricity supply to KwaGuqa New Extension is facilitated using high-tension cables, switchgear, and power transformers.

KwaGuqa 132 kV substation is fitted with two main power transformers with a total capacity of 70 MVA.

On Wednesday, October 19 it was reported that the electricity is off and upon investigation, it was established the main transformer has failed.

The specialist transformer repair company was called in to establish the cause of the failure. It was found that the transformer has an internal fault requiring to be opened up for repairs.

Further oil samples were taken to the laboratory for testing which indicated an internal fault.

The transformer cannot be put back into service due to these identified faults. The areas affected are KwaGuqa New Extensions (Extensions 2,3,4,5,6,7,9,10,11,18), Hlalanikahle extensions and Empumelelweni extensions.

The municipality is in talks with Utility Eskom for possible assistance, manufacturers, and distributors for a transformer. Further, the new unit has a long lead time for manufacturing.

The repairs on the damaged unit are being expedited for speedy installation.

The municipality apologizes for the inconvenience caused and that all electrical points be treated as life during the outage.

Please note that the electricity outage will also affect water supply and sewer handling.

Communities are encouraged to report any service interruptions to the municipality.
