Make sure it is legit before you buy a car online Kriel police warns

If your vehicle is hijacked or stolen, report it to the SAPS immediately. Make sure you have the vehicle details available to assist with the recovery of the vehicle. Also inform the SAPS whether the vehicle has a tracking system and if possible, how much fuel is in the vehicle.

A car gets stolen every 22 minutes in South Africa.

South Africa’s crime statistics for the first quarter 2022/2023 showed this steep increase in hijackings across the country.

A total of 5 866 hijackings were reported across the country between April and June. This is a 14% increase from the 5 146 hijackings reported over the same period the previous year.

Kriel SAPS related to this concern and conducted a car-hijacking and fraud awareness campaign on September 26.

Kriel SAPS station commander Lieutenant Colonel Phinah Seloane and the Visible Policing commander Captain Vusumuzi Nkambule hosted the awareness campaign in Ward 26 in Ga-Nala.

They spoke about the alarming rate of car-hijacking and the different methods used by criminals to hijack cars.

Seloane also explained the dangers of buying cars online without verifying if the seller is legitimate.

“The campaign was well attended,” said Constable Angel Makubu, Kriel SAPS spokesperson.
