eMalahleni residents outraged by spike in municipal accounts

Residents need answers from the municipality over subsequent increases in their water and electricity bills.

Residents from Ward 34 are not happy with the municipality of eMalahleni.

This comes after they noticed that their tariffs were exorbitantly high this month.

Ward 34 councillor Lizelle Steyn expressed that residents were having a hard time comprehending why their tariffs were getting higher and higher despite cutting down on their monthly usage of water and electricity.

“I know the accounts are currently being billed as winter tariffs. What makes me angry is that paid-up households are being disconnected on a daily base – sometimes those households spend up to three days without electricity before being reconnected,” Steyn mentioned.

One resident from a local estate said she keeps records of the tariffs and she was shocked at the results from the comparison, “I keep a record and it has spiked significantly, especially water.”

Residents who wished to remain anonymous also struggled to come to terms with the high accounts.

“I’m just wondering about the water amount. I don’t even wash my car, man.

We stay close to a dust road so no way I’m washing it every hour anyway.

So where is this water I’m using when in fact I don’t even have water for nine days per month?” was one of the comments from a resident.

WITBANK NEWS contacted the municipal spokesperson but received no reply on the matter yet.
