Robbers ‘ski’ their way into Ben Fleur and set course with a jet ski on dry road

'We are glad that we're safe and they didn't try to enter the house'.

Robbers are in hot water after being caught stealing a jet ski on camera at a house in Ben Fleur.

The incident happened in the morning hours of Tuesday, September 20.

The owner of the jet ski, Mrs Meghan Kachelhoffer, said she and her husband went for a drive on the jet ski this past Sunday and forgot to lock the gate when they returned.

She said there is a motor on the gate which was in working order on Sunday, but noticed it broken after the incident.

On Monday evening, one of their dogs in the yard barked continuously.

She said her husband checked but didn’t see anything.

They climbed back into bed, but their dog continued to bark, and her husband looked out the window.

She said he saw how they pushed the jet ski through the gate; he went out immediately to pursue them, but they placed sticks in the other gate we use so it couldn’t open.

“We have never experienced problems in the seven years we have lived here, and I think one becomes comfortable. It’s the worst feeling to see people come into your yard and, just like that, they’re out again within minutes,” she said in closing.

Witbank Police spokesperson Captain Eddie Hall said, “Witbank police want to draw the attention of residents in eMalahleni, especially homeowners, to criminal elements who be it by foot or vehicle, day or night, move past and syndicates who leave people at specific places to watch houses and see which motorcycles, quad-bikes, boats and jet skis visible from the road can easily be stolen. Therefore, the police request that homeowners place their possessions as far as possible behind locks and garages. They must ensure that their possessions stand in the back of the yard, out of sight if possible. We also ask that homeowners have their security measures in place as far as possible. It is also important that they have photos of their possessions as it helps to place them on police and social media pages. It is concerning for the SAPS to see a taxi involved that seemed to stop in the street and drop off the suspects who pushed the jet ski out and hitch it to the taxi. We have contacted the local taxi association and brought it to their attention for an internal investigation.”

Thieves of eMalahleni should know they are being closely watched, even on camera.
