An alleged cable thief had a shocking afternoon, and it was not the shock he was looking for

'I told the children to stay inside. It was horrifying to see this happening outside our house'

Yesterday afternoon went out with a bang in Maroela Avenue when a man allegedly tried to steal cables inside a mini-substation.

According to residents, the shocking incident occurred around 17:00.

One of the residents, Ms Lindi Taljaard, said she and her husband went to the mini-substation after they heard a bang and could smell that something had burnt.

They noticed that one of the doors to the substation was open.

She said her husband, Morné, saw a man sitting inside the box.

“The man struggled to breathe. We contacted neighbors and the neighborhood watch to come and help. The first responder paramedic and neighborhood watch were there within five minutes,” Lindi said.

The municipal technical team also arrived on the scene to repair the damage, and power was restored at around 20:30.

Another resident, Ms Michelle van der Merwe said, “The police arrived at around 20:00. The man was taken to hospital at around 20:30, and the street became quiet again at around 21:00.”
