Ikhaya Athletics Club to hold a development trial run

Nehemia Nondidwa Mtsweni believes that Ikhaya will be the athletics hub of Mpumalanga in the future in track and field, road running, and cross-country.

Ikhaya Athletics Club is organising a development trial run.

This is taking place on Saturday, August 27 for 5 km and 10 km runs.

The development trials are to honour women during the month of August, according to Nehemia Nondidwa Mtsweni, club chairman.

“We decided to honour our women this month, as it is very significant to honour them for the role they played in the society, like the women of 1956 who marched and protested against the pass laws in Pretoria. Even today they play a pivotal role in society as Banyana-Banyana has shown by winning the CAF trophy recently in Morocco,” Mtsweni said.

Mtsweni added to say that the trials were initially set for Tuesday, August 9, but were changed due to some problems and now will take place on August 27.

He believes that it will still serve its purpose since it’s still held within the women’s month.

Mtsweni is expecting more local schools to participate as they were invited.

“We are glad that God is opening His window slowly and surely we will get there. We are still on our training programmes. The Comrades Marathon is giving us hope and a face to smile because in the next ten years the winner of the race will come from Ikhaya Athletics Club. Our athletics are motivated by the way we organise our trial runs, despite that they were not able to run during the recent cross race held at TUT, all is not lost. God has answered our prayers,” added Mtsweni.

Mtsweni speaks highly of the female athletes in the club as they were promising as they are preparing for the races.

He said all is going as planned and the future looks bright for the club.

The 5km run will start at 09:30 at Landau Mine ground and finish at Sekelbos Street in Tasbet Park while the 10km run will start at Kleinkoppies and finish at Tasbet Park as well.
