Department says MEC is not selling RDP houses

Don’t let anyone fool you into buying an RDP house for a bargain.

A fake TikTok video purporting that MEC Speed Mashilo is selling RDP houses for R25 000 has the Mpumalanga Department of Human Settlements up in arms.

This video according to the department is fake, misleading and damaging.

MEC Mashilo is not part of any scheme of selling RDP houses but remains vested in the mandate to deliver sustainable integrated human settlements to citizens of the province.

The department is firm and resolute that the video is nothing but a sinister attempt to defraud unsuspecting members of the public using the name of MEC Mashilo in vain,” Mr Freddy Ngobe spokesperson for the department said.

Mashilo has called on the public not to fall prey to criminals using his name for their ulterior motives.

“We have been educating communities against the illegal selling of houses, and we will not stop. It is shameful that culprits seem to be relentless in their acts of defrauding our people,” lamented Mashilo.

He added that the department will intensify its consumer education drive and campaigns to discourage the buying and selling of RDP houses through illegal means.

Mashilo further called on people to verify with their municipalities and the department any information related to subsidised government houses.

He also retaliated that RDP houses are not for sale, a call that has been made for some time.

“The government subsidised houses (RDPs) are free and no one must ask you to pay in any form. Low-cost houses (RDPs) are, therefore, not meant for profit by the beneficiaries,” he said.

He added the Housing Amendment Act prohibits the sale of an RDP house outside a period of eight years.

If a beneficiary intends to sell their RDP house within the eight years, such should be offered back to the Mpumalanga Department of Human Settlements, and they will not get a cent for it.

The department would like to alert the public to be cautious of individuals who seek to defraud them using the good name of the government.

The public must not act on any information on social media unscrupulously without verifying such with the department.
