Thandi is struggling to get keys for her approved RDP house in Siyanqoba, eMalahleni

The struggle commenced in 2017 and persists to this day

According to Ms Thandi Juma since 2017 she has been visiting the municipality offices to check on her RDP House, but up to this day, she is still staying with her children in other people’s houses.

After applying for the house, it was approved the following year in 2018, and after checking at the municipality offices, it was confirmed that her house number 8841 at Siyanqoba has been approved.

“After the house was approved, I even went to check the house on-site, only to find that there was no house that was built. I was later told by the municipality that the contractor had problems and has some delays in building some houses allocated to them. I was told that they will change to another contractor to build my house the soonest,” said Thandi.

Two months ago, Thandi was happy when she was told that her house has been built.

Her happiness was short-lived as the site manager refused to give her the house keys.

She pointed out that she was sent from pillar to post, while at the municipality she was told that the house belongs to her.

The site manager told her a different story, that the house does not belong to her.

She added to say that she has lost count of the number of times she has been at the site only to come back empty-handed.

Thandi also tried to contact other officials from the municipality to help her to investigate the matter.

“I’m sharing a house with people of which some are on drugs, and I’m just concerned about my young children as they are sometimes being badly treated. I wish I had an alternative, but because I’m desperate, I had to endure,” added Thandi.

A questionnaire was sent to the Emalahleni Municipality communication manager for a response and in his response, Mr Lebo Mofokeng said they would do a thorough investigation on the matter after getting all the facts.
