Substance abuse awareness is raised through sport in Vosman

The aim was to help stop the rise of substance abuse among youth.

Vosman SAPS, in conjunction with the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) as well as Vosman Community Policing Forum, celebrates Youth Day by taking seven teams to the field to raise awareness of substance abuse on Thursday, June 16.

According to Communication Officer Captain Elizabeth Mkaudi this came after it was identified that the youth of today is suffering from excessive use of drugs and alcohol as well as other substances which have a potential to adversely ruin their health and lifestyle.

The days’ activities included soccer and netball games to encourage youth to refrain from substance abuse.

The soccer field was contested by Black Ban Rovers, Future Stars, Liverpool and Juventers with Black Ban Rovers facing Future Stars in the finals and Future Stars winning.

The netball court was invaded by Sbobo Ladies, Cheetahs and Small Shooters.

Sbobo Ladies and Small Shooters competed in the final round, with Sbobo Ladies coming out on top.

Captain Mkaudi advises the youth to refrain from drugs and substance abuse as well as criminal activities because crime does not pay.

She also urged the community to work closely with the Community Policing Forum and the police with a view to eradicate the scourge of devastating crime effects.
