Learners presenting messages of support to honour teachers at Pine Ridge Combined School and Coronation Secondary School

A little thank you goes a long way, especially if you are a teacher.

Teachers of five schools were being honoured recently, and learners from the schools also added their voices in honouring their teachers as well.

One of the students presented a poem, while others presented messages of support to the noble professionals.

Boiketlo Nkosi, a Grade 11 learner at Coronation Secondary School Nkosi wrote: “Today we have gathered here in the name of the teachers. On behalf of all the students, I stand in front of you to express my gratitude because a few words of appreciation is all it takes to make a teacher smile when their learners grow into something better.”

She said teachers give up their personal and family time to prepare for lessons, go an extra mile to make sure that they as learners are academically fit, deal with other people’s children and be their best second-best parents.

“Your sacrifices do not go unnoticed. We may not say it every day, but we see it every day. You are making a huge impact; your support does not go unappreciated, not forgetting the value you add to us and the world at large. I wouldn’t be here without you. Dealing with us daily is not a joke, nor is it a walk in the park. I can imagine dealing with noise-makers, a bunch of disobedient learners who do not do their work and dealing with ill-mannered children from different backgrounds. Seriously, how do you do it? “

Keep going; you are all good at what you do. We admire you because teaching is not an easy profession.

To the teachers alive and those that have passed on, and the teachers present today and those absent.

To the current teachers and those who were once teachers and those aspiring to be teachers, you are all well appreciated.

To the retired teachers and the individual who hold the title of being a teacher, you are also well appreciated as well.

Teachers, hold on to your party hats because today we choose to celebrate you. Thank you, siyabonga, baie dankie.

Ketso Tlaka, a Grade 7 learner at Pine Ridge Combined School, wrote the following poem to honour teachers:

If I could teach, a teacher

I would teach you how much more you have accomplished, more than you think you have.

I would show you the seeds you planted years ago

Which are now coming into bloom I’d reveal to you the minds

That has expanded under your care

The hearts that are serving others

Because they had you as a role model Teacher, if only I could teach youI would show you how the little good you do

Goes a long way:

Like the rain, you nurtured new green sprouts

Encouraging and leading them

Whenever they are in doubt

Like the sun whose sunny temperament

Makes studying a pleasure

Preventing discontent

Like the winter while it’s snowing hard outside

Keeping students comfortable

As a warm and helpful guide

Teacher, you do all these things

With a pleasant attitude

You’re a teacher of all seasons

And you have my gratitude
