House robberies are becoming a daily occurrence in eMalahleni

House robberies are taking place more and more often in eMalahleni.

The Witbank Police are concerned about the increasing cases of house robberies that are occurring in and around eMalahleni as winter is entering.

On June 7 a case of house robbery was opened at the police station where the complainant alleged that two armed suspects entered the premises by breaking through the bathroom window.

It is believed that the family was rudely woken up by two armed intruders early morning and was robbed of all their valuables in Hoëveld Park.

On June 4 in another incident of a house robbery in Duvha Park, it is alleged that the family was woken up by a banging noise of burglar-proof bars being broken off. The husband told his wife to go hide away in the bathroom.

It is further believed that the suspects entered the house and allegedly tied up the husband with cable ties before robbing them of all their valuables.

The armed suspects fled the scene with a vehicle.

In another incident that occurred on June 2 in Extension 12, the victim alleged that she was in her bed when a man appeared in front of her while holding a knife. It is believed that he demanded she gives him her cellphone and all her valuables.

The suspect fled the scene after gathering all the victim’s valuables.

“It looks like robbers are changing their modus operandi during winter months. In the summer, the robbers tend to commit house robberies during the day, but in winter, they prefer the night as they know that people are at home. We urge the public to be vigilant and report anything out of the ordinary,” said spokesperson from Witbank Police Station, Capt Eddie Hall.

Here are some safety awareness tips to use at home:

A high fence around the house with lockable gates is much safer than a high wall due to the advantage of the improved visibility it provides.

The primary aim of the fence is to make access/intrusion difficult and to allow dogs to move freely around the house.

Ensure that your gates are locked at all times and that the keys cannot be reached easily and are not lying around uncontrolled.

Security gates with sturdy locks in front of each outer door as well as burglar proofing covering all windows are recommended.

The following devices prevent easy access:

  • Window bars
  • Security doors
  • Security gates
  • Razor wire
  • Additional locking devices on doors
  • Strengthening of doors
  • Peep holes in the doors
  • Safety chains to doors
  • Intercom system between the home and gate, front door or garage
