Two men will have their day in court soon after being in possession of unlicensed firearm

Two men were arrested just after midnight on the N4 when police allegedly found an unlicensed firearm in their possession.

Two men are expected to appear in Witbank Magistrate’s Court this Friday after an unlicensed firearm was allegedly found in their possession.

The two suspects were nabbed at 00:15 on June 15 by the SAPS Middelburg Flying Squad on routine duty.

According to the police report, the Flying Squad members were patrolling on the N4 Road towards Pretoria when they noticed a suspicious-looking white VW Polo.

After stopping the vehicle which had two occupants inside, a search was conducted by the members whereby a pistol with ammunition was allegedly found hidden in a bag underneath a seat.

“Both the driver and his crew were immediately arrested after failing to produce a licence for the firearm. The two were charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.

The confiscated firearm will undergo ballistic tests as part of the investigation to determine if the firearm was not used in the commission of a crime somewhere.

Police cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has praised the members for the vigilance which they displayed in tackling the proliferation of firearms which contributes immensely to violent crimes.
