Witbank Rugby Club hits Newcastle hard

Witbank Rugby Club is looking forward to an exciting season in the Highveld Rugby Region 2022 Premier League.

It was all about ‘rugby and roll’ this past weekend at the sports field of WH de Klerk.

On May 7, the Witbank Rugby Club’s first and second teams took on the men from Newcastle.

The second team that played an exciting game full of knocks and surprises won the game against Newcastle 67-16.

Although it went quick and smooth for the second team, the Witbank Rugby Club’s first team were slow to get out of the blocks and soon found them trailing on the scoreboard.

In the second half, Witbank showed what they are made of and started a very strong fight back with some proper attacking rugby.

With about five minutes left in the game, the homeboys were trailing 27-26 and attacked the Newcastle goal line and forced a penalty.

Pieter Clarence made sure of the penalty to take Witbank in the lead and Witbank held on for a 29-27 hard-fought victory.

“I think discipline and defence will be the theme for this week as we are playing Middelburg Rugby Club in Middelburg and this derby is always very hard and physical,” Rudo Marx, Witbank Rugby Club manager concluded.
