Bonutrax turns all scrap into cash

Seriti boosts businesses like Bonutrax through ESD programmes.

After a list of financial obstacles, Sizwe Mtshali can finally jump for joy as his organisation is busy with a huge breakthrough.

Sizwe established his business in 2016 and has been focusing on scrap collection from mines around the province.

Bonutrax, which currently has 25 people employed, is an environmentally conscious scrap reclamation and industrial waste processing company.

The organisation operates in Ga-Nalal, but also has a workshop in Ogies.

The core of the business is to collect scrap metal from mines in the province and then sell it to scrap metal dealers and recyclers.

After facing several challenges that prevented it from being able to expand and struggling to secure contracts with local mines due to its inability to market its services effectively, the organisation was selected to join the Seriti ESD Programme, which was aimed at identifying small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs).

Seriti contracted Zevoli Growth Partners to develop and implement the ESD programme on its behalf, and to support local SMMEs in acquiring essential business skills needed to expand their operating capacity.

Sizwe was always passionate about the business, but have never run a company before, he felt that he needed guidance and support to acquire the necessary business knowledge and confidence.

“The Seriti ESD Programme equipped him with the skills and tools he needs for future success,” said Thapelo Moloi, Project Manager and Business Mentor at Zevoli Growth Partners.

The structured mentorship and training programme was aimed at helping SMMEs improve their operational efficiency, expand market share, grow strategically and align to a level of sustainability.

Bonutrax and its employees received training and guidance through mentorship, coaching, a business growth learning programme and digital marketing modules.

The programme also included a complete identity revamp, including an update of its logo and the setting up of a website.

“The Seriti ESD Programme was great. It provided me with the business and management skills that I needed to take over the day-to-day running of Bonutrax, and we now also have the correct systems in place to be successful,” added Sizwe.

The company’s revenue was said to have grown by 84% and its staff complement by 75% over the ESD programme period.

The marketing tools and skills the business acquired enabled it to create a social media presence and develop a more effective marketing strategy.
