2022 Emalahleni Easter Challenge

The 12th Emalahleni Easter Challenge soccer tournament resumed at Ackerville Grounds on Worker’s Day after being cancelled due to weather conditions during the Easter holidays.

This was an annual event that had been going on for over 11 years.

There were eight competing and the games were played using a group point system. All teams returned to play, with Mission and Morning Stars being the first and rock roll tournament, with Morning Stars defeating Mission 3-1 and Stocko defeating Stars 3-1 in their second match.

The following matches were played before moving on to the semi-finals. Emalahleni defeated Witbank PSG 2-0, effectively ending their participation in the tournament, as they had previously failed to win or obtain any points. Ezinambeni Academy’s  tournament hopes were dashed when they were defeated 2-1 by Stocko. Phuliqolo battled back to draw 0-0 with Emalahleni United.

Morning Stars and Emalahleni were two of the four teams that advanced to the semi-finals, where Morning Stars defeated Emalahleni 2-1. Phuliqoloand Stocko, on the hand, were also featured in the semi-finals on Monday, May 2, where Phuliqolo came to win this game as they had previously drawn in other matches.

Chillie was the tournament’s curtain raiser, defeating Sport Wrap Academy 4-1.

In the finals between Phuliqolo and Morning Stars, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.  Phuliqolo won the tournament 10-9 on penalties, taking home, R4 000 and Bafana Mahlangu taking the player of the tournament title.

Trevor Dube, the Sport Wrap Foundation Founder, concluded by saying that he would like to thank all the teams that participated, the sponsors, and the community for their support. It was good to see young men under the age of 23 still showing a strong interest in their sport. They hope to see them again next year.
