International Firefighters’ Day is celebrated all around the world to remember those fallen hero’s.

Wednesday, May 4 marked International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) and the firefighters from Emalahleni Fire Department hosted a small ceremony in honour of the day.

Charity Mathebula.

All the firefighters got together in a hall at the fire station, where they paid their respects to the firefighters who have died.

While everyone run’s away from a fire, only firefighters will be seen running towards a fire.

This day is also to show support to those firefighters who have dedicated their lives to protect the community and to help where needed.

Papi Mogo and Zama Tyeke firefighters from Emalahleni Fire Department saying the prayer.

All the firefighters took a moment to read out the firefighter’s prayer:

When I am called to duty, God, whenever flames may rage; Give me the strength to save some life, whatever be its age.
Help me embrace a little child before it’s too late
Or save an older person from the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling to give the best in me,
To guard my every neighbour and protect their property.
And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life;
Please bless with your protecting hand my children and my wife.
