Two bakkies hijacked on N12 by blue-light gang

If it is not spikes, then it is the notorious blue-light gang hijacking motorists on the N12.

The N12 Delmas area is notorious for hijackings by the so-called ‘blue-light gang’.

On April 22 two Toyota GD6 bakkies were once again hijacked at the off-ramp to Delmas.

According to Captain Carla Hartley, police spokesperson for Delmas SAPS a man was travelling towards Johannesburg from eMalahleni on the highway when he was stopped by a white vehicle with a blue light on the roof.

“After stopping, three men wearing police uniform approached him. They told him to be cooperative, and they got into his vehicle and forced the victim to go to the back seat. They drove with him and on the way they tied him with cable ties,” Hartley said.

The men with their tied up victim allegedly drove to a mealie field, where the victim was forced to lie down.

The suspects then took the man’s cellphones, laptop and bank cards.

The man told the police that while he was still there, the suspects brought two women to the spot.

They were allegedly also forced to join him.

Hartley said the two women who were brought to the crime scene were a mother and her 12-year-old daughter.

They, too, were travelling on the same road and the same direction when they were stopped by a vehicle with a blue light on the roof and a siren.

“After stopping the vehicle, a man clothed in full police uniform approached her and asked for a driver’s license.  While she was trying to get a licence, he put his hand into the car and pressed the button to unlock the doors of the car.  Another man, wearing civilian clothes but with a marked police facemask, entered her car from the passenger side.”

The woman was allegedly also forced to the back seat through the space between the front seats where her daughter was seated.

Their heads were allegedly covered with their clothes and their hands tied behind their backs with cable ties.

“They drove with them deep into mealie fields, where they found another Toyota GD6 bakkie parked with another victim being lied down. They were forced to join the first victim.”

The suspects allegedly searched the woman and took her bank cards and cellphones.

They apparently forced the two victims to open their banking apps and give their pin codes.

Hartley said the suspects started stripping the vehicles, possibly removing tracker units, and they left the victims there and drove away with their vehicles.

The victims walked to the road, where they got a lift to Etwatwa Police Station.
