Pedestrian safety in Pienaar Street (Klipfontein) is a concern

Residents are more concerned about Pienaar Street after woman was allegedly ran over recently

“We have the ability to see danger coming,” Ms Retha van der Westhuizen, a concerned resident of Pienaar Street in Klipfontein Extension 16 said.

Residents became more concerned after a car allegedly ran over a lady near Klipfontein Primary School on Wednesday, April 13.

According to Ms Van der Westhuizen, “there is no safety for the children. We urgently require assistance before another child gets run over. Apparently, in 1989, a child was killed after she was run over by a car in the street. The issue with the street is that people do not go slow enough for the children to pass safely, and they drive up on a one-way street.”

Ms Van der Westhuizen said she was also nearly hit by a car earlier this year while holding her grandchild.

“I would get some way to get children safe, that’s my mission,” she further added.

The big complaint in Pienaar Street is the one-way road, whereby drivers do not respect the one-way regulation.

WITBANK NEWS got to witness this when a driver entered from the wrong side.

When WITBANK NEWS made her aware of the sign, she admitted her mistake and said it was the first time, but she knows that it’s a one-way because she come from that side in the morning.

“If you realise you’ve made a mistake, you can’t turn around; instead, be cautious,” she added.

A resident suggested that the traffic department intervene; endorse the one-way regulations, and address parking in the driveways of houses.

Ward 33 Cllr Kim Faduk said, “I have contacted the control traffic chief, and he was on leave. I’d like to go see him next week with all the petitions.”
