Vegetable gardens grow from dusk to ‘Dawn’

Self-sustainability is the Provincial Democratic Alliance Women’s Network's top priority.

The Provincial Democratic Alliance Women’s Network (Dawn) from Mpumalanga visited the eMalahleni Highveld Association for the Physically Disabled Centre in Jackaroo Park.

The Provincial Chairperson from Dawn, Ms Annerie Weber says that they embarked on the project of providing vegetable gardens to people in various constituencies throughout the province.

“After Covid, the prices of food and especially vegetables have raised incredibly. Dawn assists to teach people to become self-sustainable by providing their vegetables,” Weber explained.

On April 11, Dawn established a vegetable garden at the eMalahleni Highveld Association for the Physically Disabled Centre, in Jackaroo Park, Ward 20.

“It was incredible to see the good work Alta, Grieta, Mamsy and the team are doing. The men who live at the centre came out and insisted on taking part and planting the vegetable garden and it was a fun-filled and educational experience for everyone involved,” said Weber.

The deputy chairperson Susan Mathebula and provincial Dawn member Thelma Amod, who are responsible for Gender-Based Violence awareness, both agreed that it was overwhelming to see the good work this centre is doing.

Dawn Mpumalanga has created vegetable gardens in Balfour, Delmas, Middelburg and now in eMalahleni.

Dawn Mpumalanga is fighting for women for equality, standing against GBV, against rape, and fighting for women’s rights.

When they can, Dawn also runs projects for donating sanitary towels and products to female learners that can’t afford them, to keep them in school and to give women their dignity back.

Ward 20 Councilor, Ms Maureen Scheepers was overjoyed by the new vegetable garden and welcomed more projects from Dawn in Ward 20.

“What a wonderful way to empower and teach valuable skills to the community of Ward 20 ‒ ‘Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. ‘Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime’. I welcome any similar projects in the future in Ward 20. A special thank you to resident Henryette Jacobs who arranged the location of the very valuable vegetable garden,” Scheepers concluded.
