Home burnt down in Verena, a call for help

Mother is desperately looking for clothes, bedding, and food after a house fire

A family has been left with nothing except the clothes that they were wearing when their house caught alight.

It is still unclear how or what caused the fire at their home in Verena on Thursday, April 21.

Lorraine Mdingi who has been working at 180 Degrees for the last six years has lost everything in her home.

She rents a home in eMalahleni and goes home every two weeks to see her children, her mother, and her sister.

When the fire started everyone who was at home ran away while members of the community tried to stop the fire.

“We are only left with the clothes we had on when the fire started. Nothing is left inside the house,” said a devastated Lorraine.

The community managed to give Lorraine and her family a tent, four blankets, and three mattresses to use.

“We are desperately in need of clothing, a school uniform (maroon), food, and bedding. It’s getting cold in the evenings and we need warm clothes,” said Lorraine.

The clothes sizes that are needed at this stage: are girls 18-24 months, 6-7 and 10-11 years, boy 18-24 months, women medium or 38, and women 32 or 34.

If you can help please drop off the clothing, food, or bedding at 180 Degrees (River Crescent Centre).
