Operation Hlanzeka ‒ cleaning up the cemeteries on the move

The cemeteries have all been cleaned-up.

Following the front-page article about the grave state of the cemeteries, Emalahleni Local Municipality stepped up and started cleaning up.

On Monday, April 4 the municipal Environmental Department (parks section) started with the cleaning of cemeteries at Pretoria Road Memorial Park (PRMP) and Joubertsrus Cemetery.

“The plan is to tackle all cemeteries, 14 of them active and inactive for the whole of April,” the municipal spokesperson Mr Lebo Mofokeng said.

The municipality promised that after this operation the cemeteries will be maintained monthly subject to the availability of resources, especially Human Resources.

The plan is to clean up all 14 cemeteries in the municipality.

“Currently we received assistance from Siyasebenza; they are part of the group working at PRMP,” Mofokeng said.

There are 50 volunteers helping and 10 Expanded Public Works Programme employees.

“We urge the community to work together with us in making our city and our cemeteries clean,” Mofokeng concluded.
