From the waste that has been dumped for years to a new trench that is opening up daily, the Nkosi family has lost hope in getting help.
The family home is situated at the corner of Hectorway and Luthuli Street in Lynnville.
Simphiwe Nkosi says that his family has been living at the house for more than 30 years and the issues about the stand at the back of their home have been there since they can remember.
The stand, which has been turned into an illegal dumping site, has just caused problems for Simphiwe’s brother and nephew’s health.
“Both my younger brother and nephew have sinus problems and it affects us as a family. There was a time when we tried to clean, barricade and watch out for people and tell them not to dump their waste on the site. We have given up! It got even worse when people started to burn their waste right there. This issue has been reported to the municipality countless times,” added Nkosi.
Nkosi said that the municipality had tried to place a container for people to dump their waste, but the container would be used to block the street whenever there are strikes.
The main road which is used by motorists and pedestrians had many other problems such as cable theft and a trench was made. This trench is long and deep.
“This hole is not safe as children walk past here every day when going to school. This not only affects our household, but it also affects children and motorists. Recent cable theft caused the streets to be darker at night, meaning some motorists might not see the open trench and it also invites other criminal activities,” concluded Nkosi.
A questionnaire was sent to the spokesperson of the Emalahleni Local Municipality, Mr Lebo Mofokeng, and he said that there were employees that were sent to the main road, yet no other response was received.
