Be extra vigilant where you park your car – car thieves know about tracking devices

The theft of vehicles is a huge problem in eMalahleni.

A vehicle is such a valuable belonging to anyone that owns one.

Imagine waking up to an empty parking lot where your car used to be…

This ordeal happened to a resident in eMalahleni when he woke up with no vehicle in sight.

It was alleged that the resident came from work on March 29 and locked up his vehicle that was parked in the ‘secure’ complex he lives at before heading to his apartment.

It was believed that on the morning of March 30, he was on his way to work when he saw that his Volkswagen Polo Vivo was not where he parked it.

Further on the tracking device of his vehicle was allegedly found next to the said parking.

A case of motor vehicle theft was opened at Witbank Police Station for further investigation.

“Unfortunately car theft is still one of the three biggest vehicle crimes in our country. Vehicle owners should be extra vigilant when it comes to the parking of where they leave their vehicles at night. More security measurements will make it more difficult for a criminal to steal your vehicle. If such a crime is committed, the person is urged to open a case at their local police station,” the spokesperson of Witbank Police Station, Sgt David Ratau concluded.

Here are some tips to avoid being a statistic of vehicle crime:

Be vigilant when parking Park in a well lit and secured area when in public.

At home, park your car in a garage if possible, as it would be out the eye of inquisitive thieves as well as being protected from anything that can damage your vehicle.

Lock your garage at night and an alarm system can only be beneficial.

When parking in public, always make sure you park in full view of the public.

Steering wheel locks

Having steering wheel locks is one step away from warding off thieves as it is seen as a precaution that is hard to breakthrough.

It is also easily seen, thus having a good visual deterrent and could scare thieves away at first glance.

It would usually take a bolt cutter or hacksaw to disable a steering wheel lock and with that, thieves would therefore not want to waste unnecessary time.

Protect your belongings

Ensure that your items are not visible to prying eyes when stopping at traffic lights or in a parking lot.

Don’t give away clues that you might have valuables in your car.

Items such as handbags or sports/gym bags and electronics should be covered or taken out of the vehicle completely.
