Anti-bullying intervention day held for local schools

The aim of the inter-departmental intervention was to raise awareness on the continuing distressing impact of bullying and violence that continue to plague the nation.

A nationwide anti-bullying campaign was held to make a difference in many learners’ lives.

The campaign made its way to eMalahleni to teach children about bullying and encourage those that were affected.

Various government departments collaborated to tackle the challenge of violence in schools.

The event was hosted at Empucukweni Secondary School in KwaGuqa Extention 5 on Friday, March 11.

The departments include Basic Education, Social Development, Communication and Digital Technologies, Home Affairs, Justice and Constitutional Development as well as the SAPS.

This was the third instalment of the Anti-bullying Roadshow in the country.

The roadshow was launched on May 28 last year.

The aim of the inter-departmental intervention was to raise awareness on the continuing distressing impact of bullying and violence that continue to plague the nation.

Deputy Minister for Basic Education, Dr Reginah Mhaule said as the Department of Basic Education they realized that there are a number of bullying incidents taking place in the schools, and in bullying, it involves two types of people: The perpetrator and the victim, and most of the time, those they say are victims, are perpetrators, and those regarded as perpetrators, are victims; so they decided to undertake a roadshow and visit all provinces to discuss bullying.

The Premier in Mpumalanga, Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane said they have already begun on a number of programs, one of which is to conduct local inspection random searches in schools in partnership with the SAPS.

During the searches, they discovered deadly weapons in the possession of the children, as well as drug substances that are not allowed within the school premises.

Schools around the community attended were given lessons by different stakeholders that help fight other social ills in the community.

The roadshow will continue in other parts of the country.
