‘Members are starving’ at disabled centre

The EFF is concerned about the situation at Thembelihle Self Help Centre.

After receiving some complaints at the Thembelihle Self Help Centre from members of the community and members at the center, members of the EFF visited the centre to find out what the problem is.

Together with the members of the management committee a meeting was held and the issues were raised.

Centre manager Ms Thandi Themba said she took over the position at the centre, which supports disabled people, last year and indicated that there were a lot of problems.

The allegations were that food was disappearing from the centre and also the mismanagement of funds in the centre.

Equipment was also disappearing without anybody to account for the loss. It was also alleged that the withdrawal of funds from the centre account is not monitored. The centre was losing kitchen utensils and sales at the tuck shop are not monitored.

There were also allegations of abuse at the centre.

The children also complained that the food they received was not nutritious as they eat ‘pap’ and baked beans most of the time.

A member at the centre said things are bad and officials need to account for some of their actions.

It was reported that there was a break-in at the centre recently, but whether the matter was reported or not, is not clear.

“The centre used to be well equipped with garden tools, now all have disappeared. Lack of communication with members is also a problem because the members and their parents are not told about things happening at the centre. The issue of uniform is another matter that needs some discussion. Some indicated that they cannot afford the amount paid for uniforms. The centre recently received donations from one of the mines, but the donation of food is fast disappearing and the members are starving without food. The centre is losing members and the reason behind the loss is not known,” said one of the people going to the centre daily.

Ms Themba confirmed that the centre had 75 members, but now it has only 35 members.

Ms Eva Monyepao chairperson of the centre said as the committee met with the parents of the children at the centre on Sunday, February 27 and members of the EFF will indicate the date of the next meeting to try and resolve some of the issues raised.
