Community getting their hands dirty

The community is taking care of their own ward.

Residents of Ward 7 in KwaGuqa Extension said they cannot wait for somebody to clean their ward; led by their councillor they took it upon themselves to clean the area.

Joined by other stakeholders Cllr Rudolf Nani Mekoa led by example and joined forces in cleaning the ward on March 2 and 3.

Cllr Mekoa said the purpose of the cleaning campaign was to fight littering in the many illegal dumping spots that they have in their ward.

They also want to show support to newly elected Executive Mayor Cllr Connie Nkalitshana when she said that communities in eMalahleni must be clean and a ward councillor must go to the ground and work closely with their communities to keep their ward clean.

The programme took two days; it started on Wednesday, March 2 in Emsagweni and ended on Thursday, March 3 in KwaGuqa in Extension 14.

“As a ward councillor, I invited community volunteers, NPO’s and environmental cooperatives to join us on our cleaning campaign program so that we can clean the environment so that every human being in our society, old or young can live in a clean environment. We encourage those who are in love with the environment to adopt the spot and create parks, and those who are in love with farming to adopt the spot for farming,” said Cllr Mekoa.

Cllr Mekoa went on to thank all the community members who contributed so that the program can be a success.

He also thanked all the volunteers for their contribution so that they can have water, refuse bags, food, a bush cutter, and other resources.

“We encourage all business people in our society to support social and environmental programs. Working together as a community we can do more; #hlanzeka will be a continuous program in our ward. As environmental cooperative and other stakeholders we will unite ourselves and fight unclean environments,” added Cllr Mekoa.

The stakeholders who were involved were: Non-governmental organisations (NGO), community volunteers, and community development workers (CDW).

The community members were divided into groups and they were spread across the ward.
