Rugby is back in all its glory and the first international test is in Mbombela in August

Rugby enthusiasts can set a date for August 6 for the international test at the Mbombela Stadium.

The Mpumalanga Rugby Union (MRU) was appointed as host of the Castle Lager Rugby Championship Test match between the Springboks and the All Blacks.

This test match will be played on August 6 at the iconic Mbombela Stadium.

The last international match at this stadium was played in 2016 against Argentina.

MRU  President, Mr AG Visser said, ” We thank SA Rugby for trusting us with this amazing opportunity to bring the two top international rugby teams in the world to play a test match in Mbombela.

Together with the city of Mbombela and the Mpumalanga Provincial Government, we will ensure that the teams, their management and support staff, and all the spectators and guests will have a truly fabulous ‘Lowveld’ experience.”

“We are confident that soon we will receive news that the crowd capacity of the stadiums will be increased, thereby ensuring that we have a strong home ground advantage when we play the All Blacks,” said MRU chief executive officer Marius van Rensburg.

“We hope to be in a position very shortly to open up public sales for the match, and asked for patience on the clarity of both the spectator match capacity and the rules and regulations that would be put in place for such an important international sporting event,” he added.

Mr Roelf Kotze, managing director of the Mbombela Stadium, congratulated the MRU on bringing this match to Nelspruit and was very excited at showcasing Mbombela and the Lowveld to the world.

Visser concluded with, “As rugby is truly an amazing sport, we believe that this sporting event will ignite greater interest in rugby throughout the province, and as Mpumalanga had five Springbok sons, Trevor Nyakane, Kwagga Smith, Duane Vermeulen, S’bu Nkosi and Faf de Klerk playing in the 2019 World Cup in Japan, we look forward to developing many more top rugby players to represent the Pumas and the Springboks”.
