Young girls in Vosman are dancing their way to the future

The reed dance ceremony is an opportunity to school the girls in their culture.

Young girls sometimes face various difficulties while growing up. To help them better themselves and achieve their life goals an organisation was formed way back in 2012.

The founder of the Gugulogama Youth Sisonke based in Vosman, Ms Nomcebo Nhlengethwa said her aim is to take care of young people from different backgrounds to address the challenges they face on a daily basis at their age.

She says she does not want to see the young people under her care go through the problems she went through.

The organisation has various programmes they facilitate in order to achieve their goals in developing the young people such as ‘amatshitshi’ whereby they promote abstinence from sex, self-control, and independence. They also encourage the girls to attend ‘umkhosi womhlanga (reed dance ceremony).

“Our vision is to see ourselves as an organisation that facilitates total youth development. Our mission is to facilitate the knowledge and overall development of young girls irrespective of their background by investing knowledge through social, cognitive, spiritual and physical health programmes. We teach them how to handle themselves on social media, teach them skills strategies and study methods. We believe that helping them spiritually will help them to meditate and be at peace with themselves. We also help them to understand that it is important to live a good and healthy life,” Ms Nhlengethwa pointed out.

The organisation conducts awareness campaigns, outings, motivational sessions, art sessions, sports sessions, mentorship programs and help the girls to do research.

Relevant stakeholders, pastors, different departments, mentors and professionals are invited to motivate the girls.

Their main challenge is sponsorships as all the young girls are still at school and most of them come from poor families, some are from child-headed families while others are orphans.

They do fundraising drives which in itself is a challenge.

They would like to have local business people and the private sector or individuals to support them.
