Kura, the ‘ironman’ of eMalahleni

Kura is not only a one of a kind artist but a proud father of four children and a wife, who resides with him in Old Coronation. Every morning he wakes up and takes the road to his ‘office’.

Most of the residents pass Kura Gonyani daily as his artwork exhibition stands on the corner of Gordon Road.

He started in 2005 by weaving beautiful furniture and soon after tried something new; the life-size wild animals made out of iron.

“I started small at my residence and took orders from people that contacted me about my work and my business grew bigger,” said Kura.

If you drive past the handmade art, you would see a variety of wooden pieces, fences and beautiful creations anybody would love to have in their homes.

“This work is not all of mine, but some other entrepreneurs’ as well. I don’t only want to make a living as there are so many other people that struggle daily,” he added.

WITBANK NEWS asked him how long it takes to create a masterpiece such as his iron animals and to our surprise, he said that it can take up to only one week.

Kura is not only a one of a kind artist but a proud father of four children and a wife, who resides with him in Old Coronation. Every morning he wakes up and takes the road to his ‘office’.

“Don’t get me wrong, I do face daily challenges on the street corner as some of my work gets stolen at night and two days ago they stole my only transport which was my bicycle. But besides that I am still dreaming big,” he further told WITBANK NEWS.

If you ask Kura what his main aim for this amazing initiative is, he will tell you the sky is the limit.

“My biggest dream is to own my workshop so I can make more of these pieces, create more art and job opportunities,” he concluded.

In the end, it’s always nice to buy local, as local is ‘lekker’.
