Angry mob assaults alleged shooter

Mob justice is a growing concern in many communities.

A 29-years-old man was shot and assaulted by a mob in Phola, Ogies. He later died at Phola Clinic.

It is alleged that the man allegedly shot a 37-year-old man. The latter was trying to recover a cellphone that was said to be stolen by him.

During the search for the alleged “thief” on December, 26 he was spotted at a local tavern. When he was confronted, he took out his unlicensed firearm and shot the 37-year-old man, wounding him in his shoulder.

The man then managed to withdraw his own 9mm private pistol and retaliated by shooting the alleged thief.

 

Community members mobilised and also apprehended the alleged “thief” and his friend who was trying to help him against the onslaught of the mob.

The wounded man was later transported to Witbank General Hospital and the other two men were transported to Phola Clinic.

According to information from Phola Clinic, the angry mob gathered there and tried to force entry to finish off what they have started.

Police had to escort the ambulances that had to transport the injured.

The angry mob left the clinic after they came to know that the man succumbed to his injuries.

An unlicensed firearm and ammunition were handed to the police alleged to be the one used by the assaulted man.

The other man later handed his licensed firearm to the police after being discharged from the hospital.

Police are investigating the matter and no arrests have been made so far.
