Memorial service for “Ma-Linah” and her husband

The sudden death of Cllr Linah Malatjie and her husband Mr Esau Malatjie is still sinking in.

A memorial service for the Executive Mayor of Emalahleni, Cllr Linah Malatjie and her husband Mr Esau Malatjie will be held today.

The memorial service is taking place in the city hall at 11:00.

The couple’s funeral service will be taking place at the Puma Stadium on Sunday, January 9 from 08:00.

“Ma-Linah” as she was fondly known as, and her husband died tragically in hospital after they were involved in a head-on collision on the Verena Road on Sunday, January 2.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said the couple passed away in hospital following the accident that happened at about 21:30.

Mbalula said the crash resulted in three fatalities, with the driver of the second vehicle passing away on the scene.
Condolences are still streaming in.

The South African Local Government Association (Salga) expressed its sorrow and condolences in a statement.
The association said Cllr Malatjie was an amazing and inspirational leader, who served as a member of Salga’s Provincial Executive Committee in Mpumalanga.

“Thanks to her rigour, professionalism and immense body of knowledge about local government affairs, which she generously shared, the organisation, municipality and the broader municipal government sector benefited considerably from this, and her passing is a profound loss.”

Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane said Cllr Malatjie’s passing has robbed not only her family of a mother but the municipality and the entire province of a leader with a wealth of experience in local government.
The premier acknowledged Cllr Malatjie as one of her mentors in the political arena.
