Police and other law enforcement agents encourage the public to play a role in preventing crime

The criminal market may suffer loss when people stop buying suspected stolen items.

The South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, working in conjunction with their counterparts within the security environment has deemed it fit to continue encouraging members of the public to also play their part in preventing crime as the festive season period has already begun.

Whilst police and other law enforcement agencies carry on with their mandatory duties of ensuring safety for citizens and holidaymakers, the public is urged to consider some tips that might be useful to them and their families during this season.

With the massive rain that has poured in at most areas for the past few days, the public is encouraged not to leave their children unattended at dams, rivers, or swimming pools.

On the same note, adults must not abuse alcohol, especially with children present at swimming pools, dams or rivers.

Neither should people seek help, especially from strangers. Members of the community are further discouraged from displaying money in public.

Motorists on the other hand are urged to keep personal items inside their cars, away from where anybody can see.

It is rather safe to lock valuable items in the boot of the vehicle.

It is also advisable for people to always observe their surroundings and immediately report any suspected criminal activity to the authorities.

One should ensure that the vehicles are properly locked before walking away because jammers usually interfere with vehicle locking systems.

Lawful firearm owners are also warned not to put their weapons under the seat but must be carried following regulations of the firearm control act.
