Witbank High learners scoop a national greening competition

The ‘Diverters’ were the only competitors from the Mpumalanga province who managed to reach the final stages with their presentations

Two Grade 10 Witbank High learners, Samkelo Mtsweni and Khanyile Ngwenya emerged victorious in the National Step-up 2 Start-up Competition that was held at the Marriott Hotel in Johannesburg.

This competition is the brainchild of Primestars to afford young South African learners from disadvantaged communities to showcase their entrepreneurial skills.

The duo, who called themselves ‘Diverters’, was exposed to various cinemas to watch a movie on how to create a green business. About 12 500 applications were submitted to the panel of potential investors and only 10 teams made it to the finals.

The ‘Diverters’ were the only competitors from the Mpumalanga province who managed to reach the final stages with their presentations.

The event was graced by the corporate world with companies such as Omnis, Sizwe IT, EOH, Momentum, just to name a few and were also part of the panel of judges.

The eMalahleni duo managed to scoop the coveted title and bagged tablets and scholarships worth R160 000 to further their studies in business-related courses after Grade 12.

“The objective of the project aims to stop land pollution and transforms the area into a recreational hub which can be utilized by the youth,” according to Mr Martin Sweet from Primesters.

“Hard work, perseverance, determination and discipline were the ethos which propelled these boys to greater heights,” beamed Mr Sisbusiso Macheque, their mentor-educator at the school.
