Arbor Month celebration with Green Leaves

Green Leaves' vision is to keep the world greener and minimize environmental impacts.

In response to the national Arbor Month celebrations, the young graduates from the Myezo Growth and Development Institute NPC,  embarked on a project to be part of the South African national call to plant indigenous trees in our communities, under the theme of ‘Forest Restoration’.

The institute is a non-profit, public benefit organisation.

The project involved young environmental management graduates, who are currently doing integrated workplace learning at Myezo Environmental Management Services (Pty) Ltd (Myezo).

The graduates recruited other graduates from Tshanduko Environmental Engineering (Tshanduko) as well as Lantern Learning Development Programme (LLDP) which are Myezo’s strategic alliance partners.

The graduates collectively called themselves the Green Leaves, which symbolizes the group’s vision to keep our world greener and minimize environmental impacts.

The Green Leaves chose the Arbor community in Mpumalanga, as the recipients or beneficiaries of this act of service.

One of Myezo’s clients, Gijima Supply Management Chain (Pty) Ltd (Gijima) currently operates a railway coal siding in the outskirts of the community.

Green Leaves took this opportunity to partner with Gijima who currently provides food parcels to the community.

The partnership would then add the fruit trees to the current contribution.

The partnership then enabled the provision of fruit and indigenous trees to the community and the local Arbor Primary School. Green Leaves further recruited Letsolo Water and Environmental Services and SA City Link (Pty) Ltd (SACL) who provide services to Gijima’s Arbor Siding and also the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) as well as the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), who supported the project by donating trees.

On September 30, Green Leaves’ team along with Tshanduko Environmental Engineering, LLDP, SA City Link and Myezo employees travelled to Arbor Primary School in the Mpumalanga province to plant trees and this tree planting ceremony was honoured by the key strategic stakeholders, inclusive of the school principal, Mr Neo Ditshego, two educators and a selected number of learners; the participants were kept to a minimum to adhere to Covid-19 measures.

Furthermore, Green Leaves were joined by community leaders Mr Mandla Sindane who represented the Arbor Chief and Traditional Council, Mr Seun Sikhosana who represent Arbor Community Forum, Ms Babalwa Fatyi who represented Myezo, Mr Caspa Neluheni who represented LLDP, Mr Benny Xesha who represented Gijima, Mr Mandla Leukhulen who also represented SACL, and the Green Leaves were represented by Ms Ntanganedzeni Badana and Mr Ntakadzeni Rasalanavho.

Fatyi gave a brief background of Arbor and Heritage Month celebrations in South Africa and the role that trees play in the environment.

The team planted an indigenous tree called Dais Cotinifolia (Pompon tree) during the ceremony.

A total of 24 indigenous trees were donated to the school.

As part of raising awareness for the Arbor and Heritage month 2021, participants were provided with Heritage related prizes and imparted with knowledge on the benefits of planting trees.
