Three suspects in court for alleged card cloning after SAPS clamp down on crime in the CBD

Keep your bank card safe this silly season.

Be careful with your bank cards. Cloning a bank card takes just a few seconds and can cause huge headaches.

Card cloning is happening everywhere and recently the Middelburg based team of the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation and Standard Bank Intelligence team conducted an operation that led to the arrest of three suspects for contravention of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act-related charges.

This operation was conducted in the central business area and took place on October 15.

According to Colonel Katlego Mogale the suspects were allegedly cloning bank cards when they were caught with several bank cards with a Nexgo Vodapay Maxpay device.

The bank cards and the device were seized.

The suspects aged between 42 and 49 were detained. They were charged with possession of suspected stolen property and contravention of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act.

They appeared in the Witbank Magistrate’s Court on Monday, October 18.

Mr Nischal MewalaLL, chief executive officer of the South African Banking Risk Information Centre  (Sabric) warned the public to be vigilant in order to avoid card skimming when using their cards at ATMs or to make payments.

Sabric is a non-profit company formed by South African banks to support the banking industry in combating crime.

Sabric has identified card skimming as one of the threats in the card fraud environment which has contributed enormously to counterfeit card fraud.

Cards can be skimmed at ATMs or at points of sale. Sabric wants to emphasise the importance of never accepting any assistance from anybody at the ATM and also of shielding the keypad with your free hand when inserting the pin number.

Bank customers who are going to be making use of the internet to do their shopping should make use of 3D secure products and websites that support them.

3D secure is also verified by Visa or MasterCard Secure Code; it is an authentication service that allows only the cardholder to use the card.

It helps online merchants and banks know when it is the cardholder that is shopping online.

It allows the cardholder to enter an additional password or pin to verify the legitimacy of the purchase.
