Fidelity guard allegedly fakes cash-in-transit robbery

The policeman that attended the scene just had a feeling that the "poor victim" was not telling the truth

A cash in transit complaint took a nasty turn when the guard, who was allegedly robbed during a cash-in-transit robbery, spilt the beans.

He, together with two of his former colleagues, were arrested soon afterwards and appeared in Witbank Magistrate’s Court earlier this week.

The man told police he was collecting cash from a business in the (CBD) Central Business District when he was robbed of the two bags filled with money on October 9.

“The man said he was busy putting the bags in the van when, out of nowhere, a man approached him and pointed a gun at him. He was allegedly told to lie down. Another armed man also allegedly appeared. The second man robbed him of his gun and the two men fled with the bags of money,” Capt Eddie Hall, police spokesperson, said.

The man said he told his colleague, and his colleague who was the driver of the cash van started shooting at the robbers who fled in a white Polo.

But the policeman who attended the scene just had a feeling that the “poor victim” was not telling the truth.

“When the policeman interviewed the victim, he kept on changing his story. It was decided that he would be detained for questioning. The suspects ended up telling the policeman that the robbery was planned together with his former colleagues,” Capt Hall said.

While they were questioning him at the police station, the culprit saw a gap, jumped, opened the door, and ran away.

He however did not get far as he was arrested again.

Now he does not only face a charge of cash-in-transit robbery, but also escape from lawful custody.

His two friends face charges of cash-in-transit robbery. Police recovered two firearms.
